Hi there! On my last post I showed you a website evaluation but now it's time to put some in practice. Here are 2 lessons using a few 1.0 websites and authoring tools.
This lessons follow the "Warmer, Web, What's next" model suggested by Dudeney and Hockley (2007) in How to Teach English with Technology.
Number of students: 20
Level: intermediate
LESSON 1
In this lesson, the language areas that will be covered are: classifying food (according to the food pyramid), describing its nutritional value and expressing eating routines. In order to explore these topics, 3 different websites will be used: 2 Youtube videos and an online dictionary.
WARMER:
The topic will be introduced by talking about healthy and unhealthy food. Students will complete this chart with as many healthy/unhealthy food items as they can remember:

Time allotted: 10 min
WEB:
Learners will participate in a masterchef-like competition and will be divided in groups of four; they will first have to investigate the food pyramid and appropriate diets. The teacher will provide the following webpages in order to look for information:

https://www.safefood.net/healthy-eating/guidelines
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KbA8pFW3tg&t=163s
Students will take down notes in order to complete the following stage
Time allotted: 40 min
WHAT 'S NEXT?
Once the investigation is over, the groups will have to create a healthy dish according to the information they found and write down its classification (according to the food pyramid) and its nutritional value. The teacher will be the “masterchef jury” and decide which dish is the most nutritional and healthiest, and therefore the winner.
The teacher will provide this task sheet on Word for them to use as a template:
Time allotted: 40 min

In this lesson, the language areas that will be covered are: reviewing food vocabulary, stating preference about food, describing healthy eating routines. In order to explore these topics, different websites will be used:
WARMER
The subject will be introduced by talking about the student’s favorite food/dishes and the things they don’t like. Students will get a question each randomly form the spin wheel and answer them:

Question examples:
What’s your favorite food?
What is a food you dislike?
You have to choose only ONE food and drink to eat for the rest of your life. Which one do you pick?
Name 3 of the healthiest foods you eat.
Name 3 of the unhealthiest foods you eat.
Time allotted: 10 min
WEB
Students will visit these healthy food diary blogs and write down notes on the food vocabulary, grammar structures (i like, i prefer, etc) and writing structures (first they talk about breakfast, then lunch and so on).

Students can use this template with questions as a guide:
Time allotted: 30 min
WHAT 'S NEXT?
the teacher and the students will discuss their findings and explore the content. The teacher will help the students to analyse the grammatical structures containing preference and will guide them on how to go about a food diary/journal.
Then, students will be asked to write a journal about what they eat normally and analyse if the food they eat is healthy or not. The students can use Word to write their journals and then print them.
After finishing the task, the teacher will ask the students whether they believe they eat healthy or not. The lesson will finish with a class discussion.
Time allotted: 40 min

Hello dear Belu, this post is great! I really think it is amazing that students get a real life activity to do such as the Masterchef recipe, that was amazing and relevant for them! It is very nice to have students work on a real life task and plus in the target lang! Passing on to the second lesson, I think it's great you showed them an example on what an "eating journal" is and so they have an active role in the class!
ReplyDeleteI don't really have something I would modify to your lessons, I think they go to the point and students will love it. Way to go!
Thank you, Clara! I really appreciate your feedback! :)
